Product Detail:This Choctaw Tale of "friendship and freedom" is the story of a young Choctaw girl, Martha Tom. She crosses a forbidden river when asked by her mother to pick blackberries in preparation for a wedding. She finds herself lost and encounters a group of black slaves and a young boy who helps her find her way back to her own people. When the slaves run into trouble, Martha and Little Mo, the young slave boy, lead an exciting adventure that includes a trek to freedom, the story of which is retold for many generations.

The author, Tim Tingle, is a performing storyteller and his tale reminds the reader of oral tradition. The book is beautifully illustrated in rich earthy tones. "Crossing Bok Chitto" is one of three runners-up for the Simon Wiesenthal Center's "Once Upon a World" children's book award.

The story is appropriate for children ages 9-12.

Simon Wiesenthal Center's "Once Upon A Time" Children’s Book Award Honorable Mention for 2008.
