Product Detail:"Marvelous Mattie: How Margaret E. Knight Became an Inventor" is one of three runners-up for the 2007 Simon Wiesenthal Center's Once Upon A Time Children’s Book Award. This illustrated biography, written for young children, begins with the story of a very clever girl who invented many useful items. One of her inventions, created when she was an adult, was a machine to create the paper bags we still use today. She was the first woman to receive a U.S. patent in an age when it was thought that women were not able to understand the mechanical complexities of machines. Margaret had to fight a battle in court with an imposter who claimed that he was the actual inventor of the bag.

This book is an excellent introduction to inventors and a wonderful story for women’s history month.
